Your Invitation to Daily "Lectio Divina"

Every morning Monday through Saturday Peace House residents, and any others who are interested, gather in the living room of the Peace House at 7:00 am for forty minutes of prayer, singing and reflection on a text from the Bible.  We follow a modified Lectio Divina format for our discussion.s  "Lectio Divina," a Latin term, means "divine reading" and describes a way of reading scripture whereby participants let go of their own agendas and open themselves to what the Spirit is saying to them through the sacred text.

Lectio Divina involves three readings of a text.

After the first reading, each participant is invited to repeat a word, phrase or verse from the reading that speaks personally to him or her, but without further comment.  The text is then read a second time, after which participants discuss what they hear the text saying to them.  Usually this discussion is lively, since we all have different ways of understanding what we have just heard. After a third reading all who wish to do so are encouraged to share the ways they are personally challenged by the text to change or move in a new direction.  We close out time together with a few minutes of intercessory prayer followed by a light breakfast snack.

Every Thursday the Sacrament of Holy Communion is also shared by the participants.

Many attendees make Peace House morning prayer a regular part of the start of their day, coming from the immediate neighborhood and from as far away as North Portland.  Others attend occasionally as they are able.   Short-term Peace House visitors are also encouraged to participate. We invite and encourage anyone to participate.
